Cleveland Browns: The QB position remains the team
Cleveland Browns: The QB position remains the team’s biggest question
The Cleveland Browns enter 2017 with another quarterback competition, which has become a common theme for the organization since 1999.
Cleveland Browns fans are well-aware that the quarterback position is still not solidified. The front office knows this as well, but fans are hoping 2017 is the final year in which there is yet another competition to decide the starting job.
Cody Kessler enters the year as the favorite, but the job is still not definitively his just yet. With Brock Osweiler‘s experience and DeShone Kizer’s potential, it may be another year of a quarterback carousel in Cleveland.
The position was determined to be the team’s biggest question heading into the season in a recent post on FanSided.
From the article:
Now it’s possible we could see starting quarterbacks Nos. 27-29. The team orchestrated a trade with the Houston Texans to take Brock Osweiler off their hands. After passing on a young signal-caller in the first round of April’s draft, the team used a second-round choice on Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer. And while Hogan completed 14-of-26 passes for 104 yards and two interceptions in 2016, he did not start a game.
Talking about all the starting quarterbacks since 1999 seems to be a favorite thing to do for people outside of Cleveland, although the context behind each start is often left out of the old joke.
Regardless, the lack of certainty at the position means there may once again be several starting quarterbacks in 2017, and this is alright if it means the team is trying to find the right fit.
Perhaps Kizer comes in for a struggling or injured Kessler, or Osweiler gets a shot to start and brings some victories to his temporary home.
There is also the possibility that Kessler starts all 16 games, which would be a miracle in itself, yet certainly not impossible.
This talk has become an annual event, but the current direction of the team is providing more optimism than the doomed campaigns of the past. The hope now is that the team will follow through with wins on the field.
But for that to happen, the team needs some competent play at the quarterback position. It doesn’t matter who provides it, but it must happen for the team to have any chance of being successful in 2017.

Browns Mailbag: Are the Browns done adding veteran
A holiday weekend lies ahead in the distance but there’s plenty to be done before we exit the office here in Berea.
It’s a five-question Thursday as we dive into the Browns Mailbag.
What is Desmond Bryant’s future on the D-line after missing 2016? -- Anthony L., Columbus
and it’s too early to tell at this stage of OTAs. Wednesday’s glimpse at the Browns’ defense revealed plenty of four-man fronts, when he led the team with six sacks,Mitchell Trubisky Jersey, so that would mean Bryant could be tasked with playing in the middle after multiple seasons as a 3-4 defensive end. It wouldn’t be that radical of a change for him; just different than what he did before in Cleveland. He was arguably one of the Browns’ best defensive players in 2015,Adam Shaheen Jersey,That’s to be determined,Tarik Cohen Jersey, and was poised to take on a leadership role before his unfortunate,Eddie Jackson Jersey, offseason injury.
” Bryant said last June. “This is the first time that I am an elder statesman in the D-line room. With that,John Ross Jersey, I just want to be more vocal with the guys, I get a little more responsibility. On and off of the field,“I want to work on being more of a better leader, let them know what I am thinking more, which I haven't really done as much in the past.”
could we see him as a wide receiver more than usual? -- Dave B., Rochester,With David Njoku being a little bigger than Terrelle Pryor was, N.Y.
he was used like a wide receiver all sorts of times last season. Njoku’s longest catch of his college career came when he was lined up in the slot, over-the-shoulders touchdown, as he streaked down the field for a 76-yard,It’s hard to define “more than usual” with the ever-evolving tight end position. like Anquan Boldin, to show the young receivers on the team how to prepare and play with the game with fire? -- Jim C.,Do you see the team bringing in another free-agent veteran, Wadsworth
and is focused on building a young core of players who are expected to be a part of the franchise for years to come, if not the youngest, the front office did not hesitate to add a major piece to the defense with the signing of eight-year veteran Jason McCourty. Hue Jackson was asked specifically Monday about veteran Victor Cruz at the wide receiver position,Nothing can be ruled out with the Browns at this stage of the offseason. Even though the team is one of the league’s youngest, which has one veteran (Kenny Britt) and a majority of first- and second-year players.

Texans hoping for 'exponential growth' from Will Fuller, Braxton Miller
The education of NFL rookie wide receivers involves plenty of trial, error and confusion.
It's a complicated position and there are a lot of adjustments to be made.
It's the growth and determination through those learning moments that coaches and executives look for.
In the case of Texans wide receivers Will Fuller and Braxton Miller, both displayed potential after being drafted by the AFC South champions last season.
With 4.28 speed in the 40-yard dash, Fuller emerged as a dangerous deep threat who was difficult to corral in the open field.
What held Fuller back from making more of a splash as a rookie after being drafted in the first round out of Notre Dame was a tendency to drop long throws and nagging knee and hamstring injuries.
A converted quarterback and former Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Year at Ohio State, Miller made a fairly smooth transition to slot wide receiver after being drafted in the third round. A shoulder injury eventually forced him onto injured reserve, ending his season prematurely.
The Texans are hopeful that both players will make more of an impact as they head into their second NFL season. The Texans hold their first organized team activity this week.
"'It's a difficult position to play in our league," Texans general manager Rick Smith said. "There's a lot of learning. There's a lot of physical demands on that position. The expectation and the progression from a career, there's exponential growth expected from Year 1 to Year 2.
"And it's because, in a lot of respects, they know pro football a lot better, the rhythm of the season, the demands, everything is just different. It's heightened. To the degree that a guy can come in and process that and play with some success as a rookie, that's good. That next year is when you tend to see that biggest jump."
The last time Fuller was in a game, an accurate pass from former Texans starting quarterback Brock Osweiler ricocheted off his forearm and cost them a potential 45-yard touchdown in a playoff loss to the New England Patriots.
"I got to make that play," Fuller said following the Texans' 34-16 AFC divisional-round playoff loss at Gillette Stadium. "It hit me in my hands. Brock threw a perfect pass. I got to make that play. Very tough. My team needed a play and I should've made that one. I just wasn't able to make the play."
Fuller caught just three passes for 16 yards in the AFC divisional-round loss to the Patriots despite being targeted six times.
It was a costly drop by Fuller, who finished his rookie season with 47 catches for 635 yards and two touchdowns.

Baltimore Ravens: Which undrafted free agent could
The Baltimore Ravens signed a number of undrafted free agents, but which ones are most likely to make the team this season?
The Baltimore Ravens signed a number of undrafted free agents, and while, more often than not, UDFAs don’t make much of an impact on any NFL team, there have been a share of them who have made major impacts. Hall of Famers Kurt Warner and Warren Moon, as well as Antonio Gates, James Harrison, Wes Welker, Arian Foster, these were all UDFAs who had major impacts in the NFL.
Now, I don’t necessarily think that any of the UDFAs the Baltimore Ravens signed will play to the level of any of the mentioned players, but there are a few that could make an impact on the Ravens team this upcoming season and beyond.
The first player I could see making the team is former Utah wide receiver Tim Patrick. Patrick had a good year in 2016 for the Utes, having at least five catches, 100 yards, and a touchdown in three games, including one against USC star and first-round draft pick Adoree’ Jackson.
Patrick had some trouble staying healthy in college, but he’s an athletic, talented wide receiver. He has excellent speed and is good at getting separation, he’s quick enough at the line of scrimmage to beat press coverage, and has decent hands.
The downside to Patrick, though, is that his route tree is extremely limited, he’s raw, and can sometimes give away routes. That being said, he makes for a good slot receiver if you need someone to run deep, and there have been plenty of wide receivers in the NFL who have made careers out of being “run straight fast” players.
The next player who could make the team is former Arizona State receiver Tim White. White is similar to Patrick in that he’s also an excellent athlete. A collegiate triple-jumper, White has the ability to win jump balls more often than not. He’s got great quickness and has the ability to break some ankles running routes.
White is a bit small and lanky, standing at 5’11” and just 175 pounds. Whether he can make tough catches across the middle of the field remains to be seen, thanks to that small frame, and similar to Patrick, he lacks the knowledge and ability (as of now) to run more complex routes. That being said, you can teach route-running, you can’t teach athleticism.
The final guy who I think has a good shot at making the team (maybe even the best shot) is former Oregon State player Ricky Ortiz, who is entering the team as a fullback. Ortiz is versatile to say the least. During his time at Oregon State, Ortiz played fullback, linebacker, running back, and tight end.
Ortiz is 6’0″, 232 pounds, he’s a strong guy and has a fair amount of special teams experience as well. He’s a decent blocker but can also be a solid receiver, something the Ravens used Kyle Juszczyk for a lot last year.
Ortiz could easily make the team simply by necessity, as he’s the only listed fullback on the roster right now, with Juszczyk leaving for San Francisco. Now, that doesn’t mean the Ravens won’t sign one of the free agent fullbacks out there.
Someone like Marcel Reece, who showed in his time in Oakland to be a very capable running back and receiver, could fit into the Ravens system relatively easily. Other players like Jerome Felton or Zach Line could end up on the team too.

Mike McCoy says he's a better coach after stint with Chargers
SAN DIEGO -- Compiling a 27-37 record that led to his firing at the end of the 2016 season, Mike McCoy says he’s improved at his craft after his four-year stint as the head coach of the Chargers.
now the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator,McCoy, talked with Nick Hardwick and Judson Richards of Xtra 1360 Fox Sports Radio.
” McCoy said. “There’s a learning experience as a head coach. There’s so many things that you learn,“I know one thing: I’m a much better coach today than I was four years ago when I first came to San Diego, and I think that’s really going to help me in my coaching experience moving forward. I was very fortunate to work with the offensive staff that we had here in San Diego the past four years.
“It’s a game of thievery. You find ideas. You learn things from other people. You see other teams run certain things -- certain route adjustments on certain things -- and you kind put that in your library book and apply it accordingly when you can use it at some point in time.”
